The scholarship honors senior high school students’ academic excellence and motivates them to seek post-secondary education.

Eligibility Requirements

You must also fulfill each requirement listed below in order to be eligible for this scholarship:

  • be a citizen of Canada, a permanent resident of Canada, or a protected individual as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of Canada (Visa students are not eligible).
  • Be a resident of Alberta; in order to qualify, the following requirements must be met:
    1. Before the candidate started a program of study, at least one parent or legal guardian had to have maintained permanent residency in Canada for at least 12 continuous months;
    2. the applicant has a continuous place of residence in Alberta for at least a year before beginning a program of study;
    3. If the application or the applicant’s parent(s) or legal guardian did not reside in Alberta for the entirety of that grade, the applicant is not eligible to earn a scholarship with regard to that grade.
  • be a high school graduate who graduated on or after September 30, 1980.
  • Have a designated post-secondary program or an apprenticeship that is at least one semester long and has a full academic load.

The Alexander Rutherford scholarship can only be given out once.

How to Apply

You can submit your application once your high school grades are official and you are enrolled full-time in post-secondary coursework. Varying standards will apply to high school transcript requirements.

Selection Requirement

A student must have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average across five required courses in at least one grade. Grades 10, 11, or 12 as determined by:

  • Alberta residents’ courses and grades on a certified Alberta high school transcript
  • Completed High School Outside of Alberta Courses or Grades from Another Province on Official High School Transcript

The Alexander Rutherford scholarship can only be given out once. Within a month of your post-secondary institution confirming your enrollment or attendance, Alberta Student Aid will mail you a check.

Rutherford Scholarship offers a monetary Value of $2,500

Application Process

Recipients are selected from applications for an Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. A separate application is not required.
